PRP + ECM
The use of PRP plus ECM (Extracellular Matrix) for the treatment of alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia (hereditary male or female hair loss) is available from Dr. Rahman at Asim Medical in Florida. Gaining more attention recently from patients, physicians and the news media, Dr. Rahman has used PRP to help his hair loss patients.
As a Board Certified Regenerative Medicine Physician Dr Rahman only uses High Quality PRP Kits and that is important to have a good results!
What is PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma? PRP Platelet Rich Plasma is a treatment derived from a person’s own blood platelets to enhance hair growth as a stand-alone treatment or to improve the recovery and results of hair transplant surgery. In the field of cell therapy and tissue regeneration, research is continuing to progress regarding the use of PRP’s ability to attract, stimulate and orchestrate stem cell activity to improve wound healing and naturally rejuvenate skin and hair follicles. PRP, which also contains a number of stem cells itself, has been successfully used throughout a large variety of medical specialties (Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Dental & Facial Reconstruction, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, etc.) for tissue regeneration and repair and to help patients avoid surgery or other risky interventions.
How is PRP performed as a stand-alone treatment for hair growth? A small sample of blood is obtained from the patient. This sample is processed in an FDA-cleared device to separate the platelets and plasma from other components like red blood cells. Platelets may then be ‘activated,’ releasing powerful molecules which have profound biologic effects on hair follicles and skin. In some cases Extracellular Matrix or ECM (like ACell ) may be added to the PRP. Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful cocktail of growth factors, cytokines and other proteins is painlessly injected into the area of scalp under local anesthesia where weak hair follicles exist. Microneedling of the skin is performed immediately following the injection to activate the platelets. The comfortable, outpatient procedure takes less than one hour to perform and patients may resume all activities, including workouts, shampooing, etc. immediately afterwards as there is no recovery phase. Mild soreness and redness of the scalp, if any, resolves in less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.
Is all PRP the same? Unfortunately not, and this is where it can get confusing for patients–and physicians! The quality, strength and duration of the PRP hair regrowth treatments are directly related to the preparation protocols, centrifuge settings, preparation kits, the use of ECM (BioD or ACell).
Does PRP need to be repeated? Unfortunately, the results of PRP treatment for hair regrowth is NOT permanent. Most patients who undergo PRP with ECM, require repeat treatment in about 12-24 months.
**NOTE: Some medical practices are offering hair regrowth treatment with PRP without ECM like ACell… according to research this means that “plain” PRP would likely need to be repeated every two months or sooner.
